eVisa is the only option for tourism
Australian passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival in Azerbaijan. You must have an approved eVisa before boarding your flight. Apply at least a week before travel.
Overstaying is costly
Overstaying your eVisa by even one day can result in a fine of 300–500 AZN (about $175–$300 USD) and a ban from re-entering for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Azerbaijan eVisa portal (evisa.gov.az). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-style photo, and pay the fee (around $25 USD). Processing takes up to 3 business days. You'll receive the eVisa by email as a PDF.
2
Print or save your eVisa
Print a paper copy of the eVisa and also save it on your phone. Border control at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport will scan the QR code. A digital copy on your phone is usually accepted, but a printed backup avoids any phone battery or screen issues.
3
Arrive at Baku airport and go through immigration
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. Have your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket ready. The officer will scan your passport and the eVisa QR code, then stamp your passport. The whole process usually takes 2-5 minutes per person.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods over $10,000 or restricted items. Most tourists use the green channel.
