Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Bulgaria. Bulgaria does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for Australian passport holders, but your airline might check it at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Bulgarian border control will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Officers rarely ask but will request it if your stay seems vague.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €50 per day of your stay. Bulgarian border police have the right to ask, though they seldom do for Australian passport holders.Recommended
90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen area
Bulgaria is not yet a full Schengen member, but the 90/180-day rule still applies. Days spent in Bulgaria count toward your 90-day Schengen allowance. If you've already used 90 days in other Schengen countries, you cannot enter Bulgaria visa-free.
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), not the euro
The local currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). 1 BGN is roughly €0.51. ATMs are widely available in cities. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but carry some cash for smaller shops and rural areas.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will check your passport, stamp it, and wave you through. The process usually takes 1-2 minutes.
2
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. Check the stamp before walking away — make sure it's legible and the date is correct. If you're staying longer than 90 days, you'll need a visa or residence permit.
3
Keep documents handy during your stay
While in Bulgaria, carry a copy of your passport and proof of accommodation. Police can ask for ID at any time. Keep your return ticket saved on your phone.
4
Exit Bulgaria
At departure, you'll go through exit control. The officer will stamp you out. No additional paperwork needed if you stayed within the 90-day limit.

Frequently asked questions

No. Australians can enter Bulgaria visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, or short-term visits. This applies to all border points — airports, land borders, and seaports.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit from the Bulgarian embassy before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from the Schengen area.
You need to apply for a long-stay visa (type D) or a residence permit. This must be done at the Bulgarian embassy in Australia before you travel. The process takes several weeks and requires proof of purpose (work, study, family reunion, etc.).
Not strictly for visa-free entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Bulgaria can be high — a hospital stay can cost hundreds of euros per day. Many travellers use SafetyWing or World Nomads. Keep a copy of your policy on your phone.
Have your passport (valid 6+ months), return or onward ticket, and first night's accommodation confirmation. A bank statement or credit card showing sufficient funds (around €50 per day) may also be requested, though this is rare for Australians.
Yes. Bulgaria accepts valid Schengen visas for short stays (up to 90 days). Your visa must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Bulgaria. This is useful if you're already travelling in the Schengen area.
Overstaying is a violation of Bulgarian immigration law. You may be fined (typically €50–€200), banned from re-entering Bulgaria or the Schengen area for up to 5 years, and have your passport flagged. Always leave before day 90.
