Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Bhutan eVisa at least 5 working days before departure. The eVisa is linked to your passport and costs $40 USD plus a $20 USD processing fee. You'll receive an approval letter via email — print it and carry it with your passport.Required
Valid passport
Must have 6 months validity
Your Australian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Bhutan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Paro Airport will ask to see a confirmed return or onward flight ticket. Bhutan does not allow open-ended stays — you need proof you're leaving within the visa validity period.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Have your hotel booking confirmation or tour itinerary ready. Bhutan requires all tourists to book through a licensed tour operator or pay the Sustainable Development Fee ($100 USD/night) — your accommodation is usually pre-arranged as part of that package.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry evidence of sufficient funds — at least $200 USD per day to cover the Sustainable Development Fee and daily expenses. Immigration rarely asks, but tour operators may request proof before issuing your visa clearance.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory
There is no visa on arrival for Australian passport holders. You must have an approved eVisa before you board your flight to Bhutan.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Bhutan, not from your departure date. If it's close to expiring, renew it first.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your eVisa online
Go to the official Bhutan eVisa portal and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and accommodation info. Pay the fee online. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get an email with your eVisa. Print a copy and save a digital version on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Arrive at Paro International Airport
Most flights land at Paro Airport. After disembarking, follow signs to immigration. Have your passport, eVisa, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will stamp you in.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim. Then walk through customs — there's usually nothing to declare unless you're carrying restricted items. You're free to go.

Altitude sicknessHigh risk

Bhutan's high altitude (e.g., Paro 2,250m, Thimphu 2,320m) can cause altitude sickness; acclimatize gradually.

Food and waterborne diseasesModerate risk

Risk of traveler's diarrhea and other infections; drink bottled or boiled water and eat well-cooked food.

Mosquito-borne diseasesLow risk

Low risk of dengue and malaria, especially in lower elevations; use insect repellent.

Malaria risk: low

Malaria risk is low in Bhutan, mainly in southern border areas; prophylaxis not routinely recommended for most travellers.

Based on CDC and WHO guidance. Consult a travel medicine clinic 4–6 weeks before departure for personalised advice.
