Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in the Dominican Republic. No minimum remaining validity beyond your departure date is required by Dominican immigration, but your airline may check for at least 6 months.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Dominican Republic
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking out of the country ready — they will check it before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence of sufficient money for your stay
You may be asked to show you have enough cash or credit to cover your trip. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a reasonable limit is usually enough — no specific minimum amount is published.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in the Dominican Republic, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
Tourist card fee included in most airfares
Most airlines include the US$10 tourist card fee in your ticket. Check your booking confirmation. If not, have US$10 cash ready at the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Punta Cana or Santo Domingo airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the queue for foreign visitors. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your passport and tourist card
Hand your passport to the immigration officer. If your airline didn't include the tourist card fee in your ticket, you'll pay US$10 (or equivalent in local currency) at a separate counter before the immigration booth. The officer will stamp your passport and return it.
3
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to the baggage claim area. Then walk through the customs hall. You may be asked to scan your bags or open them for inspection.
4
Exit the arrivals hall
Once through customs, you're free to leave the airport. Taxis and ride-hailing services are available outside. Have your accommodation address ready for the driver.

You'll be fined US$10 per month (or part thereof) of overstay when you leave. Pay at the airport immigration office before departure. Overstays under 30 days are usually not a problem, but longer overstays can lead to a ban.
Technically, the tourist entry is for tourism only. However, many digital nomads work remotely without issues. If you plan to stay longer, consider the Dominican Republic's Digital Nomad Visa (for stays up to 12 months).
