Australian passport holders don't need a visa for short stays in Estonia. You can enter and travel freely within Estonia and the wider Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This rule has been in place for years and stays the same in 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Estonia
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after the day you leave Estonia. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for Schengen entry
Immigration officers at Tallinn Airport will ask for proof of onward travel — a return flight or a ticket to a non-Schengen country. Budget airlines often check this before issuing a boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a bank statement or enough cash to cover your stay — roughly €50–€100 per day. Officers rarely ask, but they can request proof if you look underfunded.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free allowance covers all 27 Schengen countries combined, not just Estonia. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen country in the previous 180 days, that counts toward your total. Use the EU's Schengen calculator to track your days.
Border checks may be random
Estonia is part of the Schengen Area, but temporary border checks can be reintroduced during events or security concerns. Always carry your passport when crossing internal borders, even if there are no permanent checks.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tallinn Airport or land border
You'll go through passport control. Join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen nationals. Have your passport ready. The officer will check your passport validity, may ask about your trip duration and accommodation, and will stamp your passport. This usually takes 1–2 minutes.
2
Present supporting documents if asked
The officer may request to see your return ticket and accommodation booking. Have these easily accessible on your phone or printed. If you're staying with a friend, a letter of invitation with their address and contact details works.
3
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Once cleared, you'll get an entry stamp with the date. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it when leaving. If you're staying longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit before your visa-free period expires.
