Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Finland. Schengen rules do not require 6 months of validity beyond departure, but some airlines may still ask for it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration at Helsinki Airport will ask for proof of a return or onward flight before they stamp you in. Have your booking confirmation ready — a printout or on your phone works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Border officers rarely ask for hotel bookings, but having a printed or digital confirmation of your first night's stay avoids delays if questioned. A hostel or Airbnb booking is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Finland does not have a fixed daily cash requirement, but officers may ask how you plan to support yourself. A recent bank statement or credit card showing available balance is enough.Recommended
90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen area
Your 90 days in Finland count toward the 90-day limit for all 27 Schengen countries. You cannot spend 90 days in Finland and then 90 days in France — the clock runs across the whole zone.
ETIAS coming soon
From 2026, Australians will need an ETIAS travel authorisation before flying to Finland. It's a quick online application costing €7 and valid for 3 years. Keep an eye on official EU sources for the exact start date.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Helsinki Airport or other border
You'll join the 'All passports' queue at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the number of days allowed (usually 90).
2
Present documents if asked
The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer honestly. If they ask for proof of funds, show a bank statement or credit card.
3
Receive entry stamp
Once cleared, you'll get an entry stamp. Check it says the correct date. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any domestic flights.
