Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 30 days beyond your departure date from Kazakhstan. Airlines at check-in may enforce this, so check your passport's expiry before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kazakhstan
Immigration officers at Almaty and Nur-Sultan airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may deny boarding without it.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least $50 USD per day of your stay. Immigration may ask for it if you look underprepared.Recommended
Overstaying is costly
Kazakhstan strictly enforces the 30-day limit. Overstaying even by one day can result in a fine of around 50,000 KZT (about $110 AUD) and a deportation order. Repeat offenders may be banned from re-entering for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave a few days early.
Keep your passport stamp readable
The entry stamp is your proof of legal stay. If it smudges or fades, ask an immigration officer at any police station for a replacement stamp. This is rare but happens with older passports.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Print or save to your phone: return ticket, first night hotel booking, and travel insurance. Download an eSIM or buy a local SIM at the airport.
2
Arrive at any Kazakh airport or land border
Major entry points: Almaty International Airport, Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (Astana), and land borders from Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly. They rarely ask for supporting documents, but have them ready.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (30 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If the date is wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. There's a 'Nothing to Declare' lane for most travellers. Keep your passport handy for random checks.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Kazakhstan before the 30 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entry. If you need to stay longer, apply for a visa at a Kazakh embassy before you travel.
No. For stays under 30 days, there is no registration requirement. If you stay longer (with a visa), your host or hotel must register you within 5 days. But for visa-free travel, you're fine.
Yes. The visa-free policy applies at all international border crossings, including land borders. Just make sure you have the same documents: valid passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof. Land crossings can be slower — expect queues and thorough checks.
You will be denied entry. Airlines also check this before boarding. If your passport is close to expiring, renew it before you travel. There are no exceptions for short stays.
If you stay airside and don't pass through immigration, no visa is needed. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, the 30-day visa-free policy applies — you can enter without a visa as long as you have a valid passport and onward ticket.
No, it's not required by law. But it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Kazakhstan can be high — a hospital visit for a minor issue can cost several hundred dollars. Insurance also covers trip cancellation and lost luggage.
The local currency is the Kazakhstani tenge (KZT). Australian dollars are not widely accepted. Bring US dollars or euros and exchange at banks or official exchange offices in the city. Avoid airport exchange counters — they have poor rates. ATMs are common in Almaty and Astana.
