Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Macau. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Macau immigration, but your airline may enforce a 6-month rule — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Macau
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Macau. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight, ferry, or bus booking ready at the border.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Macau. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You may be asked to show you have enough cash or credit for your visit. A bank statement or credit card with a reasonable limit (around MOP 5,000 per person) usually satisfies the officer.Recommended
Overstaying is expensive
The fine is MOP 500 per day (about AUD 75). There's no grace period. Set a reminder to leave before day 30.
No arrival card needed
Unlike many countries, Macau does not require you to fill out an arrival card. Just walk up to the immigration counter with your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Macau International Airport or ferry terminal
You'll go through immigration at Macau International Airport (MFM) or at the ferry terminals from Hong Kong or mainland China. There are no visa-on-arrival forms to fill — just queue at the 'Foreign Passports' counter.
2
Present your passport and return ticket
Hand over your passport and be ready to show your onward ticket if asked. The officer will scan your passport, stamp it, and wave you through. The whole process usually takes 2–5 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. There's no arrival card to submit. You're free to enter Macau.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 30-day visa-free period is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Macau and re-enter (a 'visa run'), or apply for a visa extension at the Public Security Police Force before your 30 days expire — but extensions are rarely granted for tourism.
Overstaying in Macau is taken seriously. You'll be fined MOP 500 per day overstayed (about AUD 75), and you may be banned from re-entering for a period. Don't risk it — leave on time.
Yes. You can take a bus or drive across the bridge. Immigration checks are at the Macau Port side. The same visa-free rules apply — 30 days, passport valid 6 months, onward ticket required.
No visa needed for either if you're an Australian passport holder. You can enter Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days, and Macau for 30 days. Just make sure you have onward tickets for both.
No. There is no departure tax for air or ferry departures from Macau. The airport and ferry terminal fees are included in your ticket price.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Macau immigration. Get a new passport before you travel. There are no exceptions for minor damage or short validity.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or transit only. Working or studying requires a separate visa or permit arranged before arrival. If you're caught, you'll be fined and deported.
