As of 2025, Australian passport holders do not need a visa for Mexico for tourism, business, or transit stays up to 180 days. The only mandatory entry document is the Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM), a tourist card that must be filled out and presented at immigration.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Mexico. Immigration officers rarely enforce a 6-month validity rule for Australian passport holders, but airlines may check it at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexico City and Cancún airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 180 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely demand it, but having it speeds up the entry process if asked.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to funds. There is no fixed amount, but having at least $500 USD equivalent helps if questioned.Recommended
Overstay fines are real
Don't assume you'll slip through. Overstaying even a day can result in a fine at departure. If you think you'll go over, visit an INM office before your current FMM expires to request an extension.
FMM is mandatory for all entries
Even if you're just crossing the border for a day trip, you must get an FMM. Some land crossings give a 7-day version automatically – if you plan to stay longer, specifically request 180 days.

What happens at the border

1
Before travel – complete FMM online
Go to the Mexican immigration (INM) website and fill out the FMM form. Print the QR code / bar-coded receipt. This saves time at the airport. If you forget, you can fill out a paper form on the plane or at immigration.
2
Arrival at Mexican airport
Follow signs to 'Migración' (immigration). Have your passport, printed FMM receipt (if online), and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport, retain one part of the FMM, and give you the other part back. Keep that tear-off with your passport – you'll hand it in when you leave.
3
During your stay
Hold onto the FMM stub. If you lose it, you may face delays or fines when exiting. For stays longer than the stamp allows, you must apply for an extension before it expires (see FAQ).
4
Departure
At the airport, go through immigration – hand over the FMM stub along with your passport. The officer will cancel it. If you lost it, you may need to fill a replacement form and pay a small fine (around 500–600 MXN).
