Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Panama. Airlines check this at check-in, so verify your passport expiry date before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers in Panama routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave within 90 days. Have a printed copy or digital booking confirmation ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Panama does not publish a fixed minimum amount, but having a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $500 USD helps avoid scrutiny.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity before boarding. If you have less than 6 months remaining, you will be denied boarding — no exceptions. Renew your passport well in advance.
No visa required, but have documents ready
While there's no visa to apply for, immigration officers can ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Keep digital copies on your phone.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are usually two queues: one for Panamanian citizens/residents and one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue.
2
Present your documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport (with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page). The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Have them ready on your phone or printed.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry. Check the stamp before leaving the counter to ensure the date is correct. If you need less than 90 days, you can request a shorter stay.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green/red channel system. If you have nothing to declare, go through the green channel.
