Australian travellers can get a tourist visa on arrival at any major Saudi airport, or apply for an e-visa online beforehand. The visa on arrival costs about 480 SAR (roughly AUD 200) and lets you stay up to 90 days. The process is pretty smooth, but having your documents ready saves time.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Tourist eVisa via Visit Saudi portal
Apply online at visa.visitsaudi.com before you fly. The eVisa costs $135 USD and includes mandatory medical insurance. It's valid for 90 days, multiple entry, and usually approved within minutes.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Saudi Arabia. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Saudi immigration, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at Saudi airports routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or digital booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your Saudi host. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you're arriving without a pre-booked itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or card
Have access to at least $1,000 USD equivalent in cash or on a card. Saudi immigration rarely checks this for Australian passport holders, but it's wise to have proof ready.Recommended
Visa on arrival vs. e-visa: same price, different queues
The visa-on-arrival kiosks are convenient, but sometimes have long queues, especially during peak seasons (December–February, Ramadan). If you apply online beforehand, you can skip directly to passport control. The e-visa is valid for one year for multiple entries, up to 90 days each time. Cost is identical.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Saudi international airport
Fly into Riyadh (RUH), Jeddah (JED), Dammam (DMM), or Medina (MED). Proceed to immigration. Look for the 'Visa on Arrival' signs – they are well marked.
2
Use the self-service kiosk
Most airports have kiosks where you scan your passport, fill in personal details, pay the fee (approx. 480 SAR) with your credit/debit card, and get a printed visa voucher. The kiosk screens are in English. If the kiosk is out of order, staff can assist at a counter.
3
Queue for passport control
With your visa voucher and passport, join the 'Visitors' immigration queue. Hand over both documents. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints (index fingers). Answer any questions clearly.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with a tourist visa valid for 90 days (single entry). You can now collect your baggage and proceed to customs.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, all international airports in Saudi Arabia have visa-on-arrival kiosks for eligible nationalities including Australians. This includes Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Medina.
The fee is approximately 480 Saudi Riyals (SAR) – that's about AUD 200. It covers a 90-day single-entry tourist visa. Payment is by credit/debit card only.
Both options work. The e-visa costs the same and saves you a few minutes at the airport. You can apply via the Saudi 'Visit Saudi' visa portal. Processing is usually within 24 hours. The main advantage: if the kiosk queue is long, you walk straight to immigration.
No. As of early 2025, there are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for tourists. This can change, so check the Saudi Ministry of Health website before you travel.
No. The tourist visa on arrival cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must leave and re-enter or apply for a different visa type (e.g., visit visa sponsored by a Saudi entity) before your 90 days expire.
You will be denied boarding. The six-month validity requirement is strictly enforced by airlines and Saudi immigration. Renew your passport before booking flights.
No. Solo female travellers are welcome and can enter on the same visa. There is no need for a male guardian. However, note that Saudi Arabia still has conservative dress customs – women should dress modestly in public (shoulders and knees covered).
