Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Ukraine. Airlines check this at check-in, and border officers verify it on arrival. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave Ukraine within 90 days. Budget airlines flying into Kyiv Boryspil or Lviv are especially strict about checking this before boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter from a host confirming where you are staying. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry evidence of enough money for your trip — a bank statement or credit card works. The official threshold is around 20,000 UAH per person per month, but officers rarely check this for short visits.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Ukraine. If it's even one day short, you will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Check your passport now, not at the airport.
Travel insurance is not mandatory but highly recommended
Ukraine's healthcare system is under strain. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical evacuation and hospital stays costs around $50–100 for a trip. Without it, a single hospital visit could cost hundreds of dollars.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at the border
At Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, or any land border, join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and you're done.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the maximum stay allowed (90 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If it's wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
4
Keep your documents during your stay
Carry your passport and a copy of your registration (if staying in a hotel) at all times. Police can ask for ID. Hotels handle registration automatically; private hosts may need to do it at a local office.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Ukraine before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban from re-entering. If you need to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90 days expire.
You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires during your stay, you'll need to contact the Australian Embassy in Kyiv (or the nearest consulate) to get an emergency passport. You'll also need to leave Ukraine before your 90-day stay ends.
If you're staying in a hotel, they handle registration automatically. If you're in a private apartment or with friends, your host must register you at the local migration office within 3 business days. If they don't, you could face a fine when leaving.
Yes, you can enter by land from any neighbouring country. The same visa-free rules apply. Have your passport and return ticket ready. Land borders can have longer queues, especially during holidays. Check current conditions before travelling.
Denial is rare for Australians with valid documents. Common reasons: passport too close to expiry, no return ticket, or suspicious travel history. If denied, you'll be sent back to your point of origin. You can appeal at the nearest Ukrainian consulate, but it's easier to fix the issue before travelling.
Yes, for stays over 90 days or for work, study, or long-term stays, you need a visa or residence permit. Apply at the Ukrainian Embassy in Canberra before you travel. Processing takes 2-4 weeks. You cannot switch from visa-free to a work visa while in Ukraine.
No, there is no official requirement to show proof of funds for Australian passport holders. However, if an officer suspects you can't support yourself, they may ask. Having a credit card or a few hundred dollars in cash is a good idea.
