Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for your Uganda eVisa at the official immigration portal. Processing takes 3–5 business days, so submit at least a week before departure. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond stay
Your Australian passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your intended departure date from Uganda. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Entebbe Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you're arriving without a pre-booked itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly $300 USD per week of your trip. Immigration may ask to see it if you look underfunded or have a long stay planned.Recommended
Apply early — no visa on arrival
There is no visa-on-arrival option for Australians. You must have an approved eVisa before you fly. Airlines will deny boarding without it. Apply at least 2 weeks before your trip.
Yellow fever vaccine recommended
While not always checked, Uganda can require proof of yellow fever vaccination. Get the vaccine and carry the certificate — it's a small hassle that can save you big trouble at the border.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Uganda eVisa website. Fill in your personal details, passport info, travel dates, and upload a passport-style photo. Pay the fee (around USD 50 for a single-entry tourist visa) with a credit card. Processing takes 3–5 business days, sometimes longer — apply at least 2 weeks before your trip.
2
Receive and print your eVisa approval
You'll get an email with your eVisa approval. Print a copy and also save a screenshot on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and at immigration in Uganda.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
At the airport in Australia, the airline will check your eVisa, passport validity, and onward ticket. Have your printed eVisa and booking confirmations ready.
4
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport
After landing, follow signs to immigration. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Present your passport, eVisa approval, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in — usually takes 2–5 minutes per person.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No. As of 2026, Australian passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival. You must have an approved eVisa before you travel. Airlines will check this before you board.
A single-entry tourist eVisa costs approximately USD 50. The fee is paid online by credit card during the application. There may be a small processing fee added.
Typically 3–5 business days, but it can take longer during peak seasons or if there are errors in your application. Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your departure to be safe.
Yes, Uganda requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. Australia is not a risk country, but if you have recently traveled to an endemic area, you'll need the certificate. It's a good idea to get the vaccine anyway — it's recommended for all travellers.
No, the eVisa is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you would need to leave and re-apply for a new visa. Plan your trip accordingly.
Rejections are rare for Australian passport holders with complete applications. If rejected, you'll receive an email with a reason. You can reapply, but it's better to double-check all details before submitting. Common reasons: incorrect photo, insufficient passport validity, or missing information.
Officially, you may be asked to show you have sufficient funds for your stay. In practice, this is rarely requested for short tourist visits. Still, having a credit card or some cash (USD is widely accepted) is sensible.
