Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Belgium
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after the day you leave Belgium. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Belgian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines flying into Brussels often check this before letting you board.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers at Brussels Airport occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €45 per day of your stay. Belgian border guards rarely ask for it, but they can request it at entry.Recommended
Schengen area counts as one zone
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen area, not just Belgium. If you spend 30 days in France, then 30 in Germany, you only have 30 days left for Belgium. Keep track of your total days across all Schengen countries.
ETIAS coming in 2027
Starting in 2027, Canadians will need to apply online for an ETIAS authorization before traveling to Belgium or any Schengen country. It costs €7 and is valid for 3 years. Keep an eye on official EU sources for the exact launch date.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Brussels Airport or other Schengen entry point
When you land at Brussels Airport (BRU) or any other Schengen airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'EU/EEA & Swiss' vs 'All Passports'. Canadians go to the 'All Passports' line.
2
Present your passport and supporting documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and accommodation. Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready on your phone or printed.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp sets your 90-day clock. Keep the stamp visible — it's your proof of legal entry.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel. You'll then walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). That's it — you're in Belgium.
