Canadians don't need a visa to visit Costa Rica for tourism or business stays up to 180 days. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket. Here's what you need to know for a smooth entry in 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid only for the length of your stay in Costa Rica — no 6-month rule applies. Airlines sometimes check passport validity at check-in, so make sure it won't expire before you leave Costa Rica.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. A flight booking out of Costa Rica within 180 days of arrival works. If you don't have one, the airline may deny boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host covers this. No need to print it — showing it on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Costa Rica doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but having a credit card or bank statement with a few hundred USD visible helps. I've never been asked for this personally, but some travellers report being questioned at San José airport.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before you board. If your passport has less than 6 months validity from your entry date, you won't be allowed to fly. No exceptions.
Entry stamp = your visa
There's no separate visa sticker. The stamp in your passport is your authorization to stay. Check the date written on it — if it says 90 days and you want 180, ask the officer to adjust it.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) airport, follow signs to 'Extranjeros' (Foreigners). Join the queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in — usually takes 1-2 minutes.
2
Show your return ticket if asked
The officer may ask for proof of onward travel. Have your flight confirmation open on your phone or a printed copy. If you don't have one, you might be denied entry.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed (usually 90, but can be up to 180). Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the dates are correct.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel, then go through customs. You may be asked to declare items. Green light means no inspection, red light means a bag check.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 180 days per visit. The immigration officer usually grants 90 days initially, but you can ask for the full 180. If you get 90, you can extend once for another 90 days at the immigration office (Dirección General de Migración) in San José for about $100 USD.
No, 180 days is the maximum per visit. You'd need to leave Costa Rica for at least 72 hours before re-entering to reset the clock. Overstaying can result in fines of about $100 USD per month.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever (like Brazil, Colombia, or parts of Africa). Coming directly from Canada? No vaccine required.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline or denied entry at immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions.
Technically, no — the tourist visa doesn't permit local employment. But remote work for a foreign company is generally tolerated. If you plan to stay long-term, consider the 'Rentista' visa for digital nomads.
You'll be fined about $100 USD per month (or part thereof) when you leave. Pay at the immigration office before your flight. Overstaying more than 30 days can also get you banned from re-entry for up to 3 years.
No, there's no online pre-declaration for tourists. Just show up with your passport and return ticket. Some airlines may ask for a 'Migración' form on the plane — fill it out, it's simple.
