Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in the Czech Republic. Schengen rules don't require 6 months beyond departure, but airlines sometimes enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Prague Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Border officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, a printed booking confirmation covers you.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to roughly €50–€100 per day of your stay. Officers almost never check this for Canadian passport holders, but it's smart to have a recent statement on your phone.Recommended
Airlines may enforce 6-month passport validity
Schengen rules only require your passport to be valid for your stay, but many airlines (especially budget carriers) deny boarding if your passport expires within 6 months of your travel date. Check with your airline before flying.
90/180 day rule applies across all Schengen
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen area, not just the Czech Republic. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for the Czech Republic and other Schengen countries combined.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Prague Airport (or other entry point)
At Václav Havel Airport Prague, follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' after landing. Queues vary — expect 10–30 minutes. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and 90-day validity.
2
Present documents at immigration counter
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?' and 'Where are you staying?' Answer clearly. If asked for a return ticket, show the booking on your phone or a printout. They rarely ask for hotel or funds, but have them accessible.
3
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Once stamped, you're in. The stamp shows the date you must leave by (90 days from entry). Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it if you leave and re-enter Schengen. Collect your bags and exit customs (green channel for most goods).

Frequently asked questions

Yes, but you need a visa or residence permit. Options include a long-term visa for study (€80, up to 1 year), an Employee Card for work (€80, up to 2 years), or a Zivno trade license for freelancers (around €100, 1 year renewable). Apply at the Czech embassy in Canada before you travel.
No. Canadian passport holders can transit airside at any Czech airport without a visa, even if you leave the transit area. This applies at Prague, Brno, and Ostrava airports.
You'll be fined roughly €20 per day (about $22 USD), with a maximum cap. Overstaying can also get you banned from Schengen for up to 5 years. Don't risk it — set a reminder to leave before day 90.
Technically, no — the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and short study, not remote work. In practice, brief digital nomad work is tolerated, but for long-term remote work, you need a Zivno trade license (freelancer visa). Apply at the Czech embassy in Canada.
Not required for entry, but strongly recommended. A hospital stay can cost hundreds of dollars per day. Get a policy that covers medical evacuation. SafetyWing is a popular option for Canadians.
Denial is rare for Canadians, but common reasons include: no return ticket (25% of denials), insufficient funds (30%), or a suspicious travel pattern (15%). If denied, you'll be put on the next flight back to Canada. You can appeal, but it's tough to win. Best to have all documents ready.
Yes. The 90-day visa-free period applies to the entire Schengen area (29 European countries). Your days count across all Schengen countries, not just the Czech Republic. Keep track of your total days in Schengen.
