Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Denmark
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid for the whole time you are in Denmark. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline might ask for it at check-in — check with them before you fly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Copenhagen Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Danish border officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your trip. Denmark does not publish a fixed minimum, but around 500 DKK per day is a safe benchmark if asked.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule is strict
Your 90 days in Denmark count toward the same limit as any other Schengen country. If you've already spent 60 days in France, you only have 30 left for Denmark. Overstaying even by a day can trigger a re-entry ban.
Border control may ask for proof of funds
While not always required, officers can ask how you'll support yourself. A credit card or bank statement showing a few thousand euros is usually enough. Don't panic — just show it.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Danish border control
At Copenhagen Airport (CPH) or any other entry point, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready. The officer will scan it, ask a few questions (purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long), then stamp you in. The whole thing takes 2–5 minutes if there's no line.
2
Present your documents if asked
If the officer requests additional proof, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them in an easily accessible pocket — don't dig through your bag.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed. Check the stamp before walking away — if it's wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
4
Exit the arrivals area
After the stamp, you're free to collect your luggage and leave. No further checks unless you're carrying restricted items (meat, dairy, large amounts of cash).

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days in any 180-day rolling period. This applies to the entire Schengen area — time spent in France, Germany, etc. counts toward the same 90-day limit.
No. Denmark does not allow visa-free extensions for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in a ban from the Schengen area.
No. Canadians can transit through any Danish airport without a visa, even if you stay airside. No additional paperwork needed.
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If it expires, contact the Canadian embassy in Copenhagen immediately to get an emergency passport. You cannot leave Denmark with an expired passport.
Technically no — the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area. Many travellers do it quietly, but if immigration suspects you're working for a Danish company, you could be denied entry. Best to keep it low-key.
Only if you stay longer than 90 days. For short visits, no registration is required. Just keep your passport and entry stamp safe.
Report it to the local police immediately, then contact the Canadian embassy in Copenhagen (address: Kristen Bernikows Gade 1, 1105 Copenhagen). They can issue an emergency passport within 1–2 business days. Bring a police report and a passport photo.
