Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Spain. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Spanish law, but airlines may still check for 6 months — if your passport expires within 6 months, carry proof of your return flight.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to a non-Schengen country within 90 days. Budget airlines check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a signed letter from a host with their address and contact info. Border officers ask for this less often than return tickets, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Spain officially requires €100 per person per day (minimum €900 total). A bank statement, credit card, or cash works. I've never been asked for this entering Spain, but keep a recent statement on your phone just in case.Recommended
ETIAS coming soon
Starting in 2026, Canadians will need an ETIAS travel authorisation before flying to Spain. It's a quick online application (€7, valid 3 years). Keep an eye on official EU sources for the exact launch date.
Schengen area rules
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen zone (29 European countries). Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count toward the same 90-day limit. Track your days carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Spanish border control
At any Spanish airport (Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, etc.), join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will scan it and may ask a few questions: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry. This stamp is your proof of legal entry — keep your passport safe. You're now in Spain for up to 90 days.
