Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in Montenegro. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months validity, but Montenegro itself does not enforce that rule.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Montenegro
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket out of Montenegro. A flight booking to a Schengen country or back to Canada works fine.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel confirmation or a host's invitation ready. Border officers rarely ask for it, but having a printed booking avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry at least €50 per day of your stay in cash or a credit card statement. Officers almost never check this for Canadian passport holders, but it's smart to have evidence.Recommended
90-day limit applies to all of Montenegro
The 90-day visa-free stay is per entry and resets only after you leave Montenegro for at least 90 days. It does not reset if you pop over to Croatia for a day trip.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of €50–€500, deportation, and a ban from re-entering Montenegro for up to 1 year. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
Whether you fly into Podgorica or Tivat airport, or cross by land from Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, or Kosovo, join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen passports. Canadian passports are processed quickly.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page. The officer will check your photo and may ask your purpose of visit and length of stay.
3
Answer questions (if asked)
Common questions: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'Do you have a return ticket?' Answer clearly and briefly. Have your accommodation address and return ticket details ready.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away — if the dates look wrong, ask immediately.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if arriving by air), then customs. There are no additional forms or fees for Canadian passport holders.
