Canadian passport holders need an eVisa to enter Nigeria in 2026. It's a single-entry permit valid for up to 90 days, and you must apply online before you travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Nigeria eVisa
Apply for a Nigeria eVisa online before you travel. The portal is at portal.immigration.gov.ng — you'll need a digital passport photo, flight itinerary, and proof of accommodation. Processing takes 3–5 business days, and the visa is single-entry only.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Canadian passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Nigeria. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Lagos and Abuja routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone. Without one, you risk being refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you're arriving without a pre-booked hotel.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a bank statement or enough cash to cover your stay. Immigration can ask for proof of sufficient funds — having $500–$1,000 USD equivalent in cash or a recent statement avoids delays.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccination certificate
International Certificate of Vaccination
Nigeria requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all arriving passengers. You'll be asked for the yellow card at passport control — without it, you may be vaccinated on arrival or fined.Required
Yellow fever vaccine is mandatory
You must show proof of yellow fever vaccination (the yellow card) at immigration. Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated on the spot at your own expense.
eVisa is single-entry
The eVisa allows one entry. If you leave Nigeria (even for a day trip), you'll need a new visa to re-enter. Plan your travel accordingly.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the Nigerian Immigration Service eVisa portal. Fill out the application form, upload your passport photo and passport data page, and pay the fee (around $160 USD). Processing takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive your eVisa approval letter
Once approved, you'll get a PDF approval letter via email. Print it out and keep it with your passport. You'll need to show it at check-in and upon arrival in Nigeria.
3
Pack your documents
Bring your printed eVisa approval, passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, hotel booking confirmation, and travel insurance details. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a Nigerian airport
Most international flights land at Lagos (LOS) or Abuja (ABV). At immigration, present your passport, eVisa approval letter, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in. The process usually takes 15–30 minutes.
