Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid only for the length of your stay in Nicaragua. Airlines at check-in may still ask for 6 months validity — if yours is close to expiring, carry a printed copy of the Nicaraguan immigration rule to show the agent.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Nicaragua
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket before granting entry. A flight out to any destination within 90 days works — a bus ticket to Costa Rica also counts if you have it printed.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a hotel reservation. A printed booking confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Immigration may ask for proof of at least $200 USD per month of stay. A bank statement, credit card, or cash in USD works — keep a printed copy handy.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Nicaragua requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport is close to expiring, renew it first.
Keep your entry card stub
When you enter, immigration gives you a small card stub. Don't lose it — you'll need to hand it back when you leave. Hotels may also ask for it during check-in.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
You'll land at Managua International Airport (MGA). Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There's usually one queue for all foreigners — no separate line for Canadians.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and completed entry form (usually given on the plane). The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly and politely.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with a 90-day tourist entry. Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the date is correct. Keep the entry card stub they give you; you'll need it when you leave.
4
Exit the airport
After immigration, collect your bags and walk through customs. Green light means no inspection, red light means a bag check. Then you're free to go.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free period is not extendable for Canadian passport holders. You must leave before it expires. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Nicaraguan immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced.
If you're staying airside and don't pass through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you leave the transit area, you'll need to meet the same entry requirements (passport validity, onward ticket).
Yes. The same visa-free rules apply at land border crossings. You'll still need a passport valid for 6+ months and an onward ticket. Border crossings can be slow — expect queues of 1–2 hours.
No. Canadians do not pay a tourist card fee. Entry is free. Some older sources mention a fee, but it was eliminated years ago.
Always carry your passport (or a color copy) and the entry card stub. Police can ask for ID. Keep the original passport in a hotel safe and carry a copy when out.
Technically, tourism entry doesn't allow work. But short-term remote work (answering emails, Zoom calls) is generally tolerated. If you plan to stay long-term or earn locally, you'd need a proper visa.
