Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport only needs to be valid for the length of your stay in Rwanda. Airlines at check-in may still enforce the 6-month rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Rwanda
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your hotel confirmation or host's address and phone number ready. Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the visit
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Immigration rarely asks, but it's better to have it ready.Recommended
No visa, no fee, no forms
This is one of the simplest entries for Canadians. No eVisa, no arrival card, no payment. Just your passport and a return ticket.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Rwanda requires 6 months of passport validity from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
Most Canadians fly into Kigali (KGL). After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' — it's a single hall. There are separate queues for foreigners and Rwandans; join the foreigner line.
2
Present your documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport, return ticket (screenshot or printed), and optionally your hotel booking. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and wave you through. No forms to fill, no fee to pay.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim. Customs is usually a quick walk-through unless you're carrying something to declare. Then you're free to exit into the arrivals hall.
