Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Sweden. Sweden doesn't enforce the 6-month rule — just cover your stay. Airlines might still check for 6 months validity, so renew if you're close to expiry.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Arlanda and other Swedish airports will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this at check-in too. A bus or train ticket to Norway or Denmark counts.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from a friend you're staying with. Swedish border officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, you'll need a printed or digital copy.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Sweden doesn't publish a fixed amount, but around 450 SEK per day is a safe benchmark. I've never been asked for this at Swedish immigration, but it's in the rules.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Sweden is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay covers all 27 Schengen countries combined. A day in France, Germany, or Italy counts toward the same 90-day limit.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before booking flights. Airlines may deny boarding if your passport doesn't meet the 6-month rule.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Swedish border control
At Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg, or any other entry point, join the queue for non-EU passports. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. If asked, state the purpose of your visit (tourism, business) and how long you plan to stay. Keep your return ticket and hotel booking easily accessible — they may ask to see them.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry. Check the stamp before walking away. This stamp starts your 90-day Schengen clock.
4
Exit the arrivals area
After clearing passport control, collect your luggage and proceed through customs. No additional forms or declarations needed for standard tourist visits.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the Schengen Area rule — it applies to all 27 Schengen countries combined, not just Sweden. So a week in France counts toward your 90 days.
No, Sweden does not allow extensions for tourist visa-free stays. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a re-entry ban.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency before your visa-free period ends.
You must leave the Schengen Area before your passport expires. Renew your passport at the Canadian embassy in Stockholm (address: Gärdesgatan 4, 115 27 Stockholm) — but this takes time. Best to renew before you travel.
Technically, no. The visa-free entry is for tourism and business meetings only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area — Swedish immigration doesn't explicitly prohibit it, but you cannot work for a Swedish company or provide services in Sweden. Many digital nomads do it quietly, but there's no official allowance.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years. If you realize you'll overstay, contact the Swedish Migration Agency immediately to discuss options.
No. As a Canadian, you can transit through any Schengen airport without a visa. Your 90-day clock starts when you clear passport control at your first Schengen entry point.
