Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Ukraine. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Ukrainian law, but airlines may ask for at least 3 months remaining.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Immigration officers at Kyiv Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before letting you through.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it speeds things up if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. There is no fixed minimum amount, but around $50 USD per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Ukraine. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding, even if you have a return ticket.
Keep digital copies of all documents
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking on your phone. If your documents are lost or stolen, these copies make it much easier to get replacements and prove your identity.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave Canada, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, first-night accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at a Ukrainian airport
You'll land at Boryspil International Airport (Kyiv), Lviv, or Odesa. Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — there are separate queues for Ukrainian citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Foreign Passports' line.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking.
4
Receive your entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay period (usually 90 days). Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Unless you're carrying large sums of cash or restricted goods, you'll walk straight through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable for tourism. You must leave Ukraine before 90 days are up. If you need to stay longer, you'll have to apply for a temporary residence permit at a local migration office before your 90 days expire — this is a separate process and requires a valid reason (e.g., work, study, family reunion).
Overstaying can result in a fine (around 1,700 to 8,500 UAH, roughly $45–$230 CAD), deportation, and a ban from re-entering Ukraine for up to 3 years. Border officials track your entry and exit stamps carefully.
No, Canadian passport holders do not need a visa for transit through Ukraine, as long as you stay airside and don't pass through passport control. If you need to leave the airport or stay overnight, the standard 90-day visa-free rules apply.
Yes, you can enter Ukraine by land from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, or Moldova. The same visa-free rules apply — just present your passport at the border checkpoint. Expect longer queues at busy crossings, especially during holidays.
No, travel insurance is not a legal requirement for entry. However, it's strongly recommended because medical care in Ukraine can be expensive for foreigners. Some airlines may ask for proof of insurance at check-in, so it's safer to have it.
Report the loss immediately to the local police and get a police report. Then contact the Embassy of Canada in Kyiv (located at 13A Kostiantynivska Street) to apply for an emergency travel document. You'll need a passport-sized photo and the police report. Processing usually takes 1–2 business days.
No, Canadian citizens do not need to register with local authorities for stays under 90 days. Your entry stamp serves as your registration. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a temporary residence permit), registration is required.
