German citizens can travel to the Czech Republic without a visa — both countries are in the Schengen Area, so you can cross the border with just your national ID card or a valid passport. For stays under 90 days, there are no formalities beyond presenting your document at the border.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in the Schengen area
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in the Schengen zone. Airlines and border officers check this. If your passport expires within 3 months of your planned departure from Schengen, some airlines may deny boarding — renew it before you travel.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Prague Airport asks for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen zone. Budget airlines check this at check-in too. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from a friend you're staying with. Border officers rarely ask for it, but they can. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing you have enough money for your trip. Czech officers ask for this occasionally — around 1,100 CZK per day (about €45) is the informal benchmark. A recent statement from your bank works fine.Recommended
ID card is enough
You don’t need your passport. Your German Personalausweis is the simplest travel document for the Czech Republic – it’s smaller, cheaper to replace, and accepted everywhere in the EU.

What happens at the border

1
At the border – airport or land crossing
Present your passport or ID card at the EU/EES lane (or any lane if none). For flights, you’ll go through Schengen passport control — often just a quick glance or an automated gate. At land borders, there are no systematic checks when entering from another Schengen country, but random police checks can happen.
2
After entry – registration for stays over 90 days
If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you must register with the local Foreign Police (Oddělení pobytu cizinců) within 30 days of the end of the 90-day period. Not required for short visits.

Frequently asked questions

No visa needed. Germany and the Czech Republic are both in the Schengen Area, so you have freedom of movement. You can enter with just your national ID card.
Yes, absolutely. The German Personalausweis is a valid travel document for all EU/Schengen countries, including the Czech Republic. No need to bring your passport.
As an EU citizen, you can stay up to 90 days without any formalities. After 90 days, you need to register your stay with the Foreign Police and show you have health insurance and enough money to support yourself.
For EU citizens, the 6‑month rule is not strictly enforced. Your document just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. However, to avoid any hassle, renew it if it’s close to expiry.
Not required, but recommended. If you need medical care, you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from Germany to get public healthcare. Private insurance adds extra cover.
Usually German citizens do not get stamped when entering the Czech Republic because it’s intra-Schengen travel. At airports, you might go through a separate EU lane with no stamp. However, if you arrive from a non-Schengen country, you will get an entry stamp.
No. For employment, you need to register as a job-seeker or worker under EU free movement rules. You don’t need a visa, but you must notify the authorities if you stay longer than 90 days for work. Short business trips (meetings, conferences) are fine without extra permits.
