German passport holders do not need a visa to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, business, or short study (up to 6 months). You can enter visa-free and stay up to 180 days per visit. You still need a valid passport that meets the UK's entry requirements.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your German passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the UK. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by UK rules, but airlines may check for at least 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at UK borders routinely ask for proof of a return or onward ticket within your 180-day visa-free period. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from your UK host with their address and contact details ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
UK immigration can ask for evidence you can support yourself without working. Carry bank statements or a credit card showing access to at least £1,000–£2,000 for a short trip, depending on your itinerary.Recommended
Visa-free ≠ guaranteed entry
UK Border Force still has discretion to refuse entry even if you hold a German passport. Always carry proof of your return ticket, accommodation, and enough funds. Be honest and clear about your plans.
eGates save time
If you're 12 or older with a biometric German passport, use the eGates. It's usually faster than the manned booths. No stamps, no questions — just scan and walk through.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, check your passport has at least 6 months left and a blank page. Print your flight itinerary and accommodation bookings just in case. No visa application needed.
2
Arrive at the UK border
At airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester, follow signs for 'UK Border'. German passports are eligible for eGates (automated barriers) — just scan your passport and look at the camera. If eGates are unavailable or you're travelling with children under 12, join the 'All other passports' queue.
3
Speak with a border officer (if manual)
If you're sent to a booth, hand over your passport and be ready to answer: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long, and when you leave. Keep calm and be honest. Officers may ask to see your return ticket or proof of funds.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the date you must leave. Double-check it's correct. You're allowed to stay up to 180 days, but the stamp may give a shorter period — that's your hard limit.

It's not a legal requirement, but border officers often ask for proof of onward travel. Without a return ticket, you may be questioned longer or even turned away. Play safe and have one.
