Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay in Lithuania
Your German passport only needs to be valid for the time you plan to stay in Lithuania. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 27 Schengen countries, not just Lithuania. Airlines rarely check passport validity beyond the stay dates, but carry a printout of your return flight details.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Vilnius Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air check this at check-in too. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend in Lithuania works. If you're couchsurfing, have the host's address and phone number written down.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Lithuania doesn't publish a fixed daily amount, but officers expect you to cover accommodation, food, and transport. A bank statement showing a few hundred euros or a credit card with available credit is enough. Cash is rarely checked unless you look like you're working illegally.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Lithuania. If it expires sooner, you may be denied boarding in Germany or entry at the border. Check your passport now.
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies across all 27 Schengen countries, not just Lithuania. If you've already spent time in France, Spain, or any other Schengen country in the past 180 days, that time counts toward your 90-day limit.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return/onward ticket (screenshot), first-night accommodation booking (with address), and travel insurance (optional but recommended). Save everything on your phone and have a printed backup.
2
Arrive at Vilnius Airport (VNO) or Kaunas Airport (KUN)
Most flights from Germany arrive at Vilnius Airport. Follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' — even though you're visa-free, you're not an EU citizen. The queue is usually shorter than for EU citizens.
3
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation booking. Answer clearly: 'Tourism' or 'Business meeting' — keep it simple. They may also ask how long you're staying. Say the exact number of days.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp is your proof of legal entry. Keep it safe — you'll need it when leaving. If you're staying more than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit before the 90 days expire.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel and walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in Lithuania.

Frequently asked questions

No. German passport holders can enter Lithuania visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, business, and short-term visits.
You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The 180-day window is a rolling period — count back 180 days from your intended departure date to check you haven't exceeded 90 days in the Schengen area.
You must apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90-day visa-free period expires. This is done at the Migration Department in Lithuania. The process takes several weeks, so plan ahead.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism or business. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit or leave the Schengen area for 90 days before returning.
Your valid passport (6+ months validity), a return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation for your first night. Travel insurance is not mandatory but strongly recommended. Have everything ready on your phone or printed.
Not strictly required for visa-free entry, but it's highly recommended. If you need medical treatment, costs can be high — a hospital stay can run hundreds of euros per day. Many travellers get a policy from SafetyWing or similar.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years, and deportation. Always track your days carefully — use the Schengen calculator app or a simple spreadsheet.
