Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Macau. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Macau immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Macau
Immigration officers at Macau International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. Overstaying the 90-day limit can result in a fine of 500 MOP per day.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
While not always checked, having a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from a Macau resident can speed things up if an officer asks. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Officers rarely request proof of funds for German passport holders, but having a credit card or bank statement showing enough for your trip (around 500 MOP per day) avoids any hassle.Recommended
No visa needed — but have your documents ready
Macau immigration rarely asks for proof of accommodation or insurance, but they do check passport validity and return tickets. Keep a screenshot of your onward ticket on your phone.
Overstaying is expensive
If you stay past 90 days, you'll be fined MOP 500 per day (about €55). Overstays can also lead to a ban from re-entering Macau. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Macau International Airport or ferry terminal
You'll enter through the main immigration hall. For flights, that's at Macau International Airport (MFM). For ferries from Hong Kong or mainland China, you'll clear immigration at the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal or Taipa Ferry Terminal.
2
Queue at the 'Foreign Passports' counter
Join the line for non-Macau/non-China passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will ask your purpose of visit — just say 'tourism' or 'holiday'.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day visa-free entry. No forms to fill, no fee to pay. The whole process takes 2–5 minutes.
