Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least the period you plan to stay in Tajikistan. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration officers at Dushanbe airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Border officials occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly $50 per day. Officers rarely ask, but it helps if you look under-prepared.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding or entry. No exceptions.
Registration after 10 days
If you stay longer than 10 days, you must register with the authorities. Hotels handle this automatically, but if you're in private accommodation, you need to visit the local OVIR office in person.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport
Most travellers fly into Dushanbe (DYU). After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are usually two queues: one for Tajik citizens and one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport (valid 6+ months) and any supporting documents if asked (return ticket, accommodation). The officer will check your details and stamp you in. This usually takes 2–5 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim. Then head to customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now free to enter Tajikistan.

Overstaying can result in fines and possible deportation. The fine is typically around 100–200 TJS per day of overstay. You may also be banned from re-entering Tajikistan for a period of time.
If you stay more than 10 days, you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 10 days of arrival. Your hotel can usually do this for you. If you're staying in a private home, you must register in person at the local OVIR office.
Yes, you can enter by land at most border crossings. The same visa-free rules apply. Make sure your passport is stamped on entry — some land crossings may be less strict, but you still need an entry stamp.
No, travel insurance is not mandatory for entry. However, it is strongly recommended because medical costs can be high and hospitals may require upfront payment.
The local currency is the Tajikistani somoni (TJS). US dollars and euros are widely accepted for exchange. Bring cash in good condition — torn or old notes may be refused. ATMs are available in Dushanbe and major towns.
No vaccinations are required for entry. However, routine vaccines (MMR, DTP, hepatitis A and B) are recommended. Check with your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel.
