Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Guatemala. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Guatemala
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Guatemala ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host handy. Officers occasionally ask where you're staying, and having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready to show you have enough money for your trip. There's no fixed minimum, but around $50 USD per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If you have less than 6 months left, you will be denied boarding — even if Guatemala would let you in. Check your passport expiry date before booking.
No visa, no fee, no application
You don't need to apply for anything before travel. Just show up with your passport and a return ticket. No visa fee, no embassy visit, no online form.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at La Aurora International Airport (GUA)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the queue for 'Extranjeros' (Foreigners). Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport and typically grant 90 days. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.
2
Land border crossings
At land borders like El Carmen or Pedro de Alvarado, you'll go to a small immigration booth. Same documents needed. Expect a short queue. Some border posts close at 6 PM, so arrive early.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Guatemala (to a neighbouring country like Belize or Honduras) and re-enter. The 90-day clock resets on re-entry, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
Only if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (e.g., Brazil, Colombia, parts of Africa). If you're flying directly from France, no vaccine is required. If you've been in a risk area within 6 days before arrival, you'll need proof of vaccination.
You'll be fined approximately 10 GTQ (about €1.20) per day overstayed, payable at the immigration office before departure. Overstays can also result in a ban from re-entering for a period. Best to leave on time.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area — many digital nomads do it without issues. But if you plan to work for a Guatemalan company, you need a work visa. There's no official digital nomad visa yet.
Yes. On the plane or at the airport, you'll get a Customs Declaration form (Declaración de Aduanas). Fill it out and hand it to customs after baggage claim. It's straightforward — just declare any goods over $500 or large amounts of cash.
At La Aurora airport, you'll find Claro and Tigo kiosks in the arrivals hall. A prepaid SIM with data costs about 50–100 GTQ (€6–12). Alternatively, use an eSIM like Airalo before you travel — it activates on landing and avoids the queue.
Generally yes, but exercise normal caution. Petty theft (phone snatching, bag slashing) happens in crowded areas like markets and buses. Don't flash valuables, use official taxis (Uber works in Guatemala City), and avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas.
