Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Since Hungary is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not just Hungary. Airlines at check-in may ask for proof of onward travel.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from the Schengen zone
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air check this at check-in too. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address is enough. I've never been asked for this at Budapest, but it's smart to have it on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Border guards can ask for proof you have enough money for your stay — roughly €50–€100 per day. A bank statement or credit card with a decent limit works. I've never been asked, but a friend was once quizzed at the land border from Austria.Recommended
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine up to 500 EUR and a ban from the Schengen area. Set a calendar reminder to leave before day 90.
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day limit counts across all Schengen countries. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count toward the same 180-day window.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Budapest Airport (BUD) or other border
You'll join the 'All Passports' queue at passport control. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, where you're staying, and how long you plan to stay.
2
Present your passport for stamping
The officer will check your passport validity and may scan it. They'll stamp the entry date. No visa is required, so the process usually takes 1-2 minutes.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim. Customs is usually green channel for most travellers. Keep your accommodation and return ticket details handy in case of random checks.
