Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your 30-day stay. Airlines at departure may enforce a 6-month validity rule, but Mozambique immigration only requires validity covering your stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at Maputo Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers occasionally ask for this, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or card
Have at least 500 USD in cash or a credit card with available balance. Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself during the stay.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Mozambique requires 6 months of passport validity from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will not be allowed to fly.
No visa, but be prepared
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration officers may ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Have digital copies ready on your phone to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Print or save to your phone: passport info page, return ticket, first night booking confirmation, and insurance certificate. Keep them in a folder you can access offline.
2
Arrive at Maputo or other international airport
At Maputo International Airport (MPM), follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. Join the queue for foreign passports (not SADC nationals). Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly: purpose of visit (tourism), length of stay (under 30 days). They'll stamp your passport with a 30-day entry permit.
4
Collect baggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel if nothing to declare. Red channel if carrying goods over $500 or restricted items.
5
Exit arrivals hall
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Keep your passport handy — there may be a second check at the exit.
