Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Rwanda
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Rwanda does not enforce the 6-month validity rule — your passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. Airlines may still ask for 6 months validity at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Have a printed or digital copy of your onward ticket ready. Rwanda immigration officers at Kigali International Airport routinely ask for proof of departure. A same-day or next-day bus ticket to Uganda or a flight booking works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration rarely asks for it, but having it ready avoids delays. A simple booking confirmation email is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $300 USD for your 30-day stay. Immigration officers rarely check this for French passport holders, but it's a legal requirement under Rwandan immigration rules.Recommended
Visa-free for French passport holders
Since 2024, French citizens can enter Rwanda without a visa for up to 30 days. No application, no fee, no paperwork — just your passport and a return ticket.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding. If you're close to expiry, renew before you fly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Arrivals'. There are separate queues for visa-free and visa-on-arrival passengers. French passport holders use the visa-free queue.
2
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport (valid 6+ months) and boarding pass. The officer will check your details and may ask for your return ticket or accommodation. Answer clearly and politely.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with a 30-day entry permit. No fee, no form. The whole process takes 2–5 minutes if you have everything ready.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most tourists). You're free to enter Rwanda.
