Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Greece
Your passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Greece. Schengen rules don't require 6 months beyond departure, but airlines sometimes enforce it — if your passport expires within 3 months, carry proof of your return flight.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen zone
Immigration officers at Athens and other Greek airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of the Schengen area within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least €50 per day of your stay. Officers almost never check this for UK passport holders, but it's one of those things that can trip you up if they do.Recommended
90-day Schengen rule
Your 90 days count across all 27 Schengen countries. If you spend 30 days in France and 30 in Italy, you have 30 days left for Greece. Use the Schengen calculator on the EU website to track your days.
Passport validity is strict
Border officers may refuse entry if your passport has less than 6 months left after your departure date. Renew your passport well before your trip.

What happens at the border

1
Join the Schengen queue
At any Greek airport (e.g. Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion), head to the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue – not the EU line. UK passports are processed here.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport (open to the main photo page). The officer may ask a few questions – purpose of visit, length of stay, accommodation. Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Get your passport stamped
If everything checks out, the officer stamps your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp before walking away – it should be clear and show the date. This stamp starts your 90-day clock.
4
Proceed to baggage claim
After passport control, follow signs to baggage claim and customs. There are no additional checks unless you have something to declare.
