Hungary entry requirements for United Kingdom passport holders
British passport holders can visit Hungary (and the wider Schengen Area) for tourism, business, or transit without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This visa-free arrangement applies in 2025. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Hungary and have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Valid passport Must be valid for the duration of your stay | Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Hungary does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but your airline might enforce that rule — check with them before you fly. | Required |
| Return or onward ticket Proof of departure from the Schengen area | Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this more often than you'd expect. | Required |
| Proof of accommodation Hotel booking or host invitation | Keep a copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Border officers rarely ask for it, but when they do, they want to see a name, address, and dates that match your travel plans. | Recommended |
| Proof of funds Show you can support yourself during your stay | Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing you have enough money for your trip. Hungary does not publish a fixed minimum, but around €50–€100 per day is a safe benchmark if asked. | Recommended |
| Schengen 90/180-day rule Track your days across all Schengen countries | Your 90-day visa-free allowance applies to the entire Schengen zone, not just Hungary. If you spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen country earlier, that counts toward your 90 days. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to track your remaining days before you travel. | Required |
