British passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Jordan's main airports (Queen Alia and Aqaba) and most land border crossings with Israel. You pay the 40 JOD (about £45) fee and receive a 30‑day visa stamp on the spot — the process takes just a few minutes.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Jordanian immigration strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. Airlines check this at check-in and will deny boarding if your passport expires sooner. If you're transiting through Jordan, the same rule applies.Required
Visa on arrival
Single-entry visa issued at Queen Alia International Airport
British passport holders get a single-entry visa on arrival at Amman's Queen Alia Airport for 40 JOD (about £45). Pay in cash at the bank counter before the immigration line — they accept Jordanian dinars, US dollars, euros, and British pounds. The visa is valid for 30 days and cannot be extended.Apply onlineRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Jordan
Immigration officers at Queen Alia Airport ask for a return or onward ticket before stamping you in. Airlines also check this at check-in. Have a printed copy or a screenshot of your booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration rarely asks for proof of accommodation, but airlines sometimes request it at check-in. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. If you're camping or staying with friends, a simple printed invitation works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Jordan doesn't have a fixed minimum amount, but officers may ask how you'll fund your trip. Carry at least 500 JOD (about £560) in cash or have a credit card statement ready. ATMs are widely available in Amman but less so in rural areas.Recommended
Jordan Pass saves you money
If you plan to visit Petra, Wadi Rum, or other major sites and stay at least 3 nights, buy a Jordan Pass online before you travel. It covers the visa fee (so you get the visa for free) and entry to over 40 attractions. The pass starts at 70 JOD — well worth it.
Avoid the King Hussein Bridge from the West Bank
If you’re coming from the West Bank (Palestine), do NOT use the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge unless you already have a Jordanian visa. Visa on arrival is not available there. Use the Sheikh Hussein crossing (north) or fly into Amman instead.

What happens at the border

1
Land at a designated entry point
Visa on arrival is available at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), Aqaba's King Hussein International Airport (AQJ), King Hussein Bridge (Allenby), Wadi Araba/Yitzhak Rabin crossing, and the Sheikh Hussein/Northern border crossing. It is NOT available at the King Hussein/Allenby Crossing if you enter from the West Bank — use the Sheikh Hussein crossing instead.
2
Fill in the arrival card
During your flight or at the border, you’ll be given a white arrival/departure card. Fill it out with your passport details, flight number, and hotel address. Keep the departure portion safe — you’ll need to hand it in when leaving.
3
Queue at the visa-on-arrival counter
At the airport, follow signs for 'Visa on Arrival' (or 'Immigration'). Don’t get in the wrong queue — there’s a separate line for visa holders. Present your passport, completed arrival card, and cash (or card at Queen Alia Airport).
4
Pay the fee and get your stamp
Hand over 40 JOD. The officer will print and attach the visa sticker to your passport, then stamp it. The whole process takes about 5 minutes unless the queue is long.
5
Proceed to passport control
After receiving the visa, go to the main passport control booths. An officer will scan your passport, check your face, and wave you through. Then you collect your luggage.

Frequently asked questions

The standard visa on arrival is valid for 30 days. It cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a longer-term visa at a Jordanian embassy before you travel, or leave and re-enter. Overstaying is fined — about 1.5 JOD per day.
No. Visa on arrival is available at Queen Alia International Airport, Aqaba's King Hussein International Airport, the Sheikh Hussein Bridge (north), Wadi Araba (south near Aqaba), and the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby) ONLY if you enter from Israel. The King Hussein/Allenby crossing from the West Bank does NOT offer visa on arrival — you must have a visa in advance.
If you arrive at Aqaba's airport or the Wadi Araba crossing from Israel (near Eilat), you can get a visa on arrival. The fee is the same: 40 JOD. Often the queue is shorter than at Queen Alia Airport.
At Queen Alia Airport, the visa counter usually accepts Visa or Mastercard, but it’s not guaranteed — the card machine might be down. Cash in Jordanian dinars or US dollars is the most reliable method. Avoid large notes. At land borders, cash is almost always required.
No, the visa on arrival is separate. However, if you buy a Jordan Pass online before you travel (for stays of at least 3 nights), the visa fee is waived. You still get a visa on arrival, but you don’t pay the 40 JOD. Show your Jordan Pass QR code at the border.
Overstays are penalised at 1.5 JOD for each day beyond the 30 days. You’ll need to pay the fine at the airport before departure. Keep your passport stamped with the departure date or you might face a bigger fine. If you overstay a long time, you could be banned from re-entry.
No. Visa on arrival is for a single stay of 30 days and cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, apply for a visa before travelling, or exit and re-enter (e.g., a day trip to Israel).
