British passport holders don't need a visa for tourist or business trips to Mexico – you can stay up to 180 days. You'll receive a tourist card (FMM) on arrival. Just check that the officer writes the number of days they're granting; it's not always 180.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Mexico. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel at Mexico City and Cancún airports. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host covers this — keep a copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. A bank statement showing a few hundred dollars or a credit card with available credit usually satisfies them.Recommended
Always check the number of days written on your FMM
The immigration officer should write the number of days they're granting in ink on your FMM. Don't assume it's 180. If they write 30, ask politely if you can have more. It's easier to change it at the counter than later.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the FMM form
Pick up a Multiple Immigration Form (FMM) on the plane or in the immigration hall, or fill it out online in advance. Enter your personal details, flight number, and address in Mexico. Keep it neat – mistakes mean you start over.
2
Join the immigration queue
At any Mexican airport (Cancún, Mexico City, etc.), follow signs to 'Migración'. Queues can be 30–60 minutes at busy times. Have your passport and completed FMM ready.
3
Present documents and get stamped
Hand over your passport and the completed FMM. The officer will check, stamp, and write the number of days allowed (usually up to 180, but verify before you walk away). They keep one part of the form and return the other to you.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, get your bags from the carousel. At customs, you'll press a button – green means go, red means a bag check. Declare any restricted items honestly.

Frequently asked questions

No. Mexico does not allow extensions of the tourist permit (FMM) for British citizens. If you want more time, you must leave Mexico (e.g., a short trip to Belize or the US) and re-enter to get a new FMM. Overstaying can result in a fine (around 600 MXN) and may affect future entries.
Technically Mexico can ask for proof of funds, but in practice they rarely ask British passport holders. Carry a credit card or some cash (e.g., $500 USD equivalent) just in case.
Go to the immigration office at the airport before your flight. They will likely charge a fine (around 200–300 MXN) and issue a replacement. Keep the FMM safe – it's effectively your visa.
No. Each entry requires a new FMM. If you leave Mexico (even for a day trip), you get a new tourist card on return. The 180-day clock resets each time.
You must have at least 6 months of validity at entry. Once you're in, it's fine if it expires, but you may have trouble flying out or entering other countries. Renew it before you travel.
No, business activities like attending meetings or conferences are covered by the visa-free tourist card. However, if you are getting paid in Mexico or doing paid work, you need a different permit. Stick to 'business tourism' and you're fine.
