Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Apply early – processing times vary
The eVisa can take up to 15–20 days during busy periods. Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved. We recommend applying at least 3–4 weeks in advance.
Single entry only
Your eVisa is valid for one entry. If you plan to visit neighbouring countries like Botswana or Mozambique, you cannot return to South Africa on the same visa. You'd need a new application from abroad.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the e-Visa Online
Go to evisa.dha.gov.za. Create an account, fill in your personal details, upload your passport scan, a recent passport photo, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, and bank statements. Pay the visa fee (about ZAR 1,350 – roughly ₹6,000) by credit or debit card. Submit and wait for processing – it usually takes 5–10 working days.
2
Receive and Print the eVisa
You'll get an email with your approved eVisa within 5–10 working days (sometimes up to 15). Print two copies – one for your documents, one as backup. The eVisa is linked to your passport number, so you don't need to paste anything in your passport.
3
Arrive at South African Immigration
At airports like Johannesburg OR Tambo, Cape Town, or Durban, proceed to the foreign passport queue. Have your printed eVisa, passport, return ticket, and accommodation details ready. The officer may ask about your funds and plans. They'll stamp your passport with a 30-day entry stamp.
4
During Your Stay
Respect the 30-day limit. The eVisa is single entry only – if you leave South Africa (even for a day trip), you cannot re-enter on the same eVisa. Extensions are not possible for eVisa holders. Overstaying can lead to fines or a re-entry ban.

Frequently asked questions

Processing usually takes 5–10 working days, but can stretch to 15–20 during peak seasons (e.g., December holidays). Apply at least 3–4 weeks before your trip. There is no expedited option.
No, the eVisa is not extendable. You must leave before the 30-day validity expires. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to exit and apply for a new visa from abroad.
You will be denied entry and sent back on the next available flight at your own expense. Indian citizens do not qualify for visa-on-arrival in South Africa. Always have your eVisa approved before flying.
If you are transiting through South Africa to another country and won't leave the international transit area, you do not need a visa. But if you need to clear immigration (e.g., to change airports or collect baggage), you need a transit visa or eVisa.
No, the eVisa is single entry. If you leave South Africa (even to a neighbouring country like Botswana or Mozambique), the eVisa becomes invalid. You must apply for a new one to re-enter.
You need: scanned passport bio-page, a recent passport-size photo (white background), round-trip flight itinerary, hotel bookings for all nights, bank statements for the last 3 months, and a valid email address. Some applicants may be asked for additional documents like a letter of invitation, employment letter, or yellow fever vaccination certificate if traveling from an endemic country.
The eVisa fee is approximately ZAR 1,350 (about ₹6,000). This is subject to change. Payment is made online by credit/debit card. The fee is non-refundable even if the visa is denied.
