Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Japanese passport only needs to be valid for the period you plan to stay in Hungary. Airlines sometimes enforce 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Budapest Airport will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A flight to London, Istanbul, or Tokyo works — just have the booking confirmation ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host ready. Border officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, a printed booking saves you 10 minutes of explanation.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash/card limit to cover your stay — roughly €50–€100 per day. Officers almost never check it for Japanese passport holders, but it's your safety net.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Hungary is part of the Schengen zone. Your 90-day visa-free stay covers all 27 Schengen countries combined. Keep track of your days — overstaying can result in fines or a re-entry ban.
No arrival declaration needed
Japanese passport holders do not need to register their arrival with local authorities. Just enter through passport control and you're good.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Budapest Airport or land border
You'll go through Schengen border control. At Budapest Airport (Terminal 2), join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, accommodation, and return date.
2
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. Answer briefly: 'Tourism' or 'Business'. If asked, show your return ticket and hotel booking. The officer will stamp your passport with entry date and allowed stay.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel. There is no customs declaration for personal items. Walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel unless you have goods to declare.
