Sri Lanka entry requirements for Japan passport holders
Japanese passport holders can get a visa on arrival in Sri Lanka — no need to apply in advance. Just show up at Colombo (CMB) or other international airports with your passport and a return ticket. This policy is in effect for 2025.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ETA application Electronic Travel Authorization | Apply for your ETA at eta.gov.lk before departure. The ETA is valid for 30 days from arrival and costs $35 USD for SAARC countries or $50 USD for others. Approval usually comes within 24 hours — I've seen it arrive in under an hour.Apply for ETA | Required |
| Valid passport Must cover entire stay | Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity beyond your departure date from Sri Lanka. Airlines check this at check-in — I've been turned away at Narita for having 5 months left. | Required |
| Return or onward ticket Proof of departure | Immigration officers at Bandaranaike International Airport ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this at the visa-on-arrival counter. | Required |
| Proof of accommodation Hotel booking or invitation letter | Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Sri Lanka. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the visa counter. | Recommended |
| Proof of funds Sufficient cash or card | Have at least $50 USD per day of your stay available — cash, credit card, or bank statement. I've never been asked for this at Colombo, but the regulation exists. | Recommended |
