Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in the Netherlands
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your 90-day stay. No 6-month validity rule applies for Japanese passport holders entering the Netherlands or any Schengen country.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Schiphol and other Schengen entry points routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or an invitation letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least €55 per day of your stay. Immigration rarely checks for Japanese passport holders, but it's smart to have proof accessible.Recommended
Overstaying is serious
The 90-day limit is strict. Overstaying by even one day can lead to a fine, detention, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.
Schengen area counts as one zone
Your 90 days apply to the entire Schengen area (29 European countries). If you spend 30 days in France and 60 in the Netherlands, that's your full 90 days used. You cannot reset the clock by visiting a non-Schengen country.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone.
2
Arrive at Schiphol Airport (or other entry point)
At Amsterdam Schiphol, follow signs to 'Arrivals' then 'Passport Control'. EU citizens use separate lanes; non-EU citizens (including Japanese) use the 'All Passports' queue.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and proof of return. Answer clearly and briefly. They will stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now free to enter the Netherlands.
