Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Taiwan. Taiwan does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for Japanese passport holders, but your airline might — check with them before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at Taoyuan and Kaohsiung airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Taiwan covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or card balance
Taiwan does not publish a fixed minimum, but having access to around NT$10,000 (roughly ¥35,000) per day in cash, card, or travel money is a safe buffer. ATMs are widely available at airports.Recommended
Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Taiwan. If it expires sooner, renew before you go. Airlines will check this at check-in.
No visa, no fee, no application
Japanese passport holders get 90 days visa-free at no cost. No application needed. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) or other entry point
You'll join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and hand you an arrival card (if not already filled out on the plane). The whole process usually takes 5–15 minutes.
2
Fill out the arrival card (if not done on the plane)
You'll receive a small white card on the flight or at the immigration hall. Fill in your name, passport number, flight number, and address in Taiwan. Keep it with your passport until you exit.
3
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. Customs officers may randomly check bags.
