Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Sweden
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Sweden. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required for entry, but your airline may enforce a 3-month validity rule — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Arlanda and other Swedish airports routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A flight booking to a non-Schengen country works — a bus or train ticket to Norway or Denmark does not, since those are still Schengen.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a signed invitation letter from your host ready. Border officers at Swedish airports ask for this less often than return tickets, but it's a standard request if they pull you aside.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least 450 SEK per day of your stay. Swedish border police rarely ask for this for New Zealand passport holders, but it's a legal requirement under Schengen rules.Recommended
Schengen area rules
Sweden is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to all 27 Schengen countries combined. Track your days carefully — overstaying even by one day can cause problems.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you enter Sweden. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel. Border control will deny entry if your passport doesn't meet this requirement.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Swedish border
At Arlanda, Landvetter, or other airports, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will check your passport and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay.
2
Passport stamping
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day visa-free period. Check the stamp is legible before leaving the counter.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There are usually no customs checks for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.
