Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay in Hungary
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Hungary does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce their own rules — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may also check your flight reservation matches your stated itinerary.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Officers at Budapest sometimes ask for this during secondary screening, especially if you arrive without a clear plan.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €100 per day of your stay. Immigration rarely asks for this for US passport holders, but it's a legal requirement under Schengen rules — keep a recent statement handy.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen area, not just Hungary. Days spent in any Schengen country count toward the 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Entry requirements may change
Starting in 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will require US citizens to obtain an online travel authorisation before visiting Hungary. This is not a visa, but a quick online application costing €7. Stay updated on the official ETIAS website.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Budapest Airport (BUD) or other entry point
When you land, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Passport Control'. At Budapest Airport, there are separate queues for EU and non-EU citizens. Join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' line. Have your passport, boarding pass, and any supporting documents ready.
2
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may ask a few questions: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They will stamp your passport with the entry date.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After passport control, go to the baggage claim area. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. If you have items over the duty-free limit, use the red channel.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is limited to 90 days within any 180-day period. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa (D-type) or a residence permit before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from the Schengen area.
No, US citizens do not need to register with Hungarian authorities for stays under 90 days. Your passport stamp serves as your registration. If you stay in a hotel, they will register you automatically.
Technically, the visa-free regime is for tourism and business meetings, not for remote work. However, short-term remote work (a few days) is generally tolerated. If you plan to work remotely for an extended period, consider Hungary's 'White Card' digital nomad visa, which allows stays up to one year.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined (typically 50-300 EUR depending on the duration), deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Always track your days carefully.
No, Hungarian border officials strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding or entry.
No, US citizens do not need a transit visa for Hungary. You can stay in the international transit area of the airport without a visa. If you need to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need to meet the standard visa-free entry requirements.
No, it is not mandatory for visa-free entry. However, it is strongly recommended. If you need medical treatment, costs can be high. Some travel insurance policies also cover trip cancellation and lost luggage.
