Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date from South Africa. Have at least two blank visa pages for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at OR Tambo and Cape Town International routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers may ask for this if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to at least 3,000 ZAR per day of your stay, either in cash, traveler's checks, or a credit card statement. Immigration rarely asks, but budget airlines sometimes check before boarding.Recommended
Overstay = trouble
South Africa takes overstays seriously. Even one day over your 90-day limit can result in a fine (up to R2,000) and being branded 'undesirable' – which can lead to a 5-year ban. Set a reminder to leave before your stamp expiry date.
Visa-free is for tourism and business only
You cannot work, study, or volunteer without the appropriate visa. Volunteering without a permit is considered work and can get you deported. If your trip has a volunteering component, check with the South African embassy first.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at South African airport
You'll land at OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, or King Shaka (Durban). Follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for foreign nationals and citizens.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport (open to the photo page) and your completed arrival card (usually given on the plane). Be ready to state the purpose of your visit and where you're staying. The officer will take your fingerprints and a photo.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with 'Port of Entry' and a handwritten date until which you can stay (usually 90 days from arrival). Count the days – overstaying is a serious offense.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then proceed through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the 'Nothing to Declare' lane. Sometimes they'll randomly ask to scan your bags.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, technically you can apply for an extension at a Department of Home Affairs office, but it's a slow, bureaucratic process that usually requires a strong reason (medical, family emergency). The fee is around R425 (about $23) plus a processing fee. Start at least 30 days before your 90 days expire. Many travelers find it easier to leave the country and come back – but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
You'll be denied entry. Airlines also check this at check-in and may refuse to let you board. If you're a US citizen, renew your passport well in advance (processing time is 6-8 weeks standard, or 2-3 weeks expedited).
No, the 90-day visa-free entry covers business activities like meetings, conferences, and consultations. You cannot take up paid employment, though. If you intend to work in South Africa, you need a proper work visa.
You must apply for a visitor's visa extension before your 90 days are up. Visit a Department of Home Affairs office in person. The process takes several weeks and costs about R425 per application. Approval is not guaranteed, and overstaying can lead to fines or a ban.
Yes. If you've visited or transited through a country with yellow fever risk (e.g., parts of Brazil, Africa), you must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Otherwise, they may vaccinate you on the spot or refuse entry. Check the WHO list before you travel.
Not required for entry, but it's highly recommended. Medical care for serious issues can be expensive, and many hospitals require upfront payment. Having insurance that covers medical evacuation is smart, especially if you plan to do adventure activities (safari, hiking, shark diving).
Yes, you can drive with a valid US driver's license for up to 90 days. After that, you need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Note that South Africa drives on the left side of the road – take it easy at first.
