Australians don't need a visa to visit Spain for up to 90 days for tourism, business, or family visits. Since Spain is part of the Schengen Area, that 90-day limit applies across all Schengen countries combined.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Spain. Spain does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may still enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Spanish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this at check-in too — have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Spanish border officers sometimes ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready. A printed copy saves time if your phone has no signal.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Spain requires visitors to show at least €100 per person per day of stay, with a minimum of €900 total. A bank statement or credit card usually satisfies this — keep it accessible.Recommended
90/180 day rule – counts all Schengen countries
The 90-day visa-free limit is for the entire Schengen Area, not just Spain. If you've already spent 60 days in France before arriving in Spain, you only have 30 days left. Use the EU calculator (ec.europa.eu) to track your days.
Travel insurance recommended
While not mandatory for Australian passport holders, travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical expenses is strongly advised. Spain's public healthcare doesn't cover foreign visitors for non-emergencies. Without insurance, a hospital stay can be very expensive.
Entry is usually smooth
Spain is a popular destination for Australians and border officers are used to processing visitors. As long as your passport is valid, you have a return ticket, and you haven't overstayed before, you'll typically be waved through in a few minutes.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Spanish border control
Join the 'All Passports' queue at the airport (Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, etc.). Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will ask your purpose, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. You may be required to provide fingerprints and a digital photo (standard for non-EU citizens). You'll get an entry stamp.
2
Stamp check and 90/180 rule
The stamp shows your entry date. Officers may count your previous Schengen stays to ensure you haven't exceeded 90 days in any 180-day window. Keep a mental note of your comings and goings.
3
Secondary inspection (rare)
If flagged for extra checks, you'll be directed to a small room. They'll verify your documents, ask about your itinerary, and check your funds. Stay calm, answer truthfully.

Frequently asked questions

Australians can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the same for all 29 Schengen countries. Count days carefully – day of entry counts as day 1.
Extension is very difficult for tourists. The default is no extension. In extreme cases (medical emergency, force majeure), you can apply for a 90-day extension at the Foreigners' Office (Oficina de Extranjería) in your province. You'll need a compelling reason, proof of funds, and insurance. Do not just overstay.
Overstaying is a serious violation. You could be fined (up to €500), deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 3 years. The 90-day clock resets only after you've been outside Schengen for 180 days.
Yes. For stays over 90 days, you need a national visa (D visa) or a residence permit. Apply before you leave Australia at the Spanish consulate in your home state. Common types: work visa, student visa, non-lucrative visa (for retirees with sufficient funds).
Yes, there are no internal border checks in Schengen. But you must still respect the 90/180 rule. If you fly into Portugal then take a bus to Spain, your entire stay in Schengen counts together.
Yes, visa-free for cruise passengers stopping at Spanish ports. You can go ashore for a few hours without a visa. But if your cruise stays overnight or you join the cruise in Spain, the 90-day rule applies from your day of arrival.
Australian passport (original, not a copy). Carry a photocopy separately. Spain requires foreigners to carry ID at all times. A digital copy on your phone is not enough – you can be fined if you can't show physical ID.
