Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay in Schengen area
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Italy. Italy does not require 6 months beyond departure, but airlines may enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed declaration of hospitality (dichiarazione di ospitalità) from your host ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient means for your stay
Italy can ask you to show you have enough money for your trip. The guideline is roughly €50 per day of stay — carry a bank statement or credit card as backup.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 day rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to all 27 Schengen countries, not just Italy. Every day spent in any Schengen country counts. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to avoid accidentally overstaying.
ETIAS on the horizon
From 2027, Australians will need to apply for ETIAS before travelling to Italy and other Schengen countries. It's an online form costing about €7, valid for 3 years. No action needed now, but plan for it after 2026.
Airlines may be stricter than border control
Even though Italy doesn't require a return ticket or proof of funds at border control, airlines often check these before boarding. Always carry proof of onward travel and enough funds to avoid being denied check-in.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at passport control
At any Italian airport or land border, follow the 'Non-EU' lane. At busy airports like Rome FCO or Milan MXP, expect 15–30 minute queues.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer will check its validity and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay. You can optionally show your return ticket and accommodation. Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Receive entry stamp
They'll stamp your passport with the entry date, which marks the start of your 90-day Schengen stay. Keep the stamp visible—don't cover it with anything.
4
Proceed to baggage claim
After clearance, collect your luggage. No extra checks for Australian citizens unless you carry restricted goods like large amounts of cash or prohibited items.

Frequently asked questions

No — the 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen Area. You cannot stay longer without a visa or permit. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban. If you need to stay longer, apply for a national visa (e.g., work, study, or family) at the Italian embassy before your visa-free period ends. No extensions are available for the 90-day tourist stay.
Yes, Italy is one of 27 Schengen countries. The 90-day limit is cumulative — your time in France, Spain, Germany, etc., all counts toward the same 90 days. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to track your days.
Not immediately. You can be in the Schengen Area for 90 days in any 180-day period. If you leave after 30 days, you have 60 days left within the next 150 days. Once you reach 90 days, you must wait 90 days outside Schengen before returning.
Technically, the visa-free regime doesn't allow you to work for an Italian employer. Working remotely for a foreign company is a grey area — many do it, but it's not officially permitted. Italy introduced a 'digital nomad visa' in 2024 for remote workers, but that requires a separate application. For short stays, most tourists don't face issues, but if questioned, say you're on holiday.
That would be problematic — you need a valid passport to leave. If your passport is about to expire, renew it before travel. If it's lost or expires during your stay, contact the Australian Embassy in Rome for an emergency passport.
If you stay in a hotel, they register you automatically. If staying with friends or in a private rental, your host must register your presence with the local police (Questura) within 48 hours. It's not your responsibility, but confirm your host will do it.
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a visa-waiver program expected to launch in 2027. It will require Australians to get an online authorisation (around €7) before travel to Schengen countries. As of 2026, it's not yet in effect, so no action is needed now. Monitor official EU updates.
