Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Iceland. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline may enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Keflavík will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital booking confirmation for your first few nights. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having one can delay entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to around 10,000 ISK per day. Border officers almost never check this for Australian passport holders, but it's in the rules.Recommended
Schengen rules apply
Iceland is part of the Schengen Area but not the European Union. The 90/180-day rule applies to all Schengen countries. Keep track of your days – overstaying even by one day can have serious consequences.
Airlines may refuse boarding
Even though Iceland doesn't require proof of onward travel, some airlines enforce their own rules. Even if you have a valid visa-free entry, the airline can deny boarding if you lack a return ticket. Always carry a printed or digital copy of your return ticket or onward journey to avoid being denied boarding.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Keflavik Airport
Most flights from Australia arrive via a European hub. At Keflavik, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and join the non-EU/EEA queue. Have your passport ready, no forms to fill.
2
Passport control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask the purpose of your visit, where you'll be staying, and how long. Answer briefly and clearly. They will stamp your passport with the entry date.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, head to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most). That's it. You're in Iceland.

Frequently asked questions

No. Australian passport holders don't need a visa to transit through Iceland (even staying overnight in the airport transit zone). If you leave the airport, you'll need to satisfy visa-free entry rules (90-day limit etc.).
No, not as a tourist. The 90-day limit applies to the whole Schengen area. Tourist visa extensions are not available; you must leave the Schengen area before day 91. For longer stays (work, study, family reunion), you need a separate national visa or permit from Icelandic immigration.
Yes. The 90-day limit applies to all Schengen countries combined. So days spent in Germany, France, etc. count towards the same 90 days in any 180-day period. Use the Schengen calculator (available online) to track your days carefully.
Legally, no. But airlines often require proof of onward travel before they let you board. Some budget airlines enforce this strictly; have a ticket even if you plan to leave via land or sea. It's wise to have a return ticket or a ticket to a non-Schengen country.
No. Iceland does not issue visas on arrival for Australian citizens. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from the Schengen area.
You should never travel with a passport that will expire before you leave. If it does expire unexpectedly, contact the Australian Embassy in Copenhagen (which covers Iceland) immediately. An emergency passport can be issued, but it takes time and costs around AUD 250. Avoid this by ensuring 6 months validity at entry.
As of 2026, there are no Covid-specific entry requirements for Iceland. No forms, tests, or vaccination proofs are needed. However, always check the Icelandic Directorate of Health website before travel for any sudden changes.
