Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Sweden. Schengen rules do not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but some airlines may still ask for it — check with your carrier before check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Arlanda and other Swedish entry points routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may check it before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Swedish border officers rarely ask for proof of accommodation, but having a hotel confirmation or a host's address handy avoids delays. If staying with friends, a simple invitation letter with their contact info works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Sweden does not enforce a fixed daily minimum, but officers may ask how you'll cover costs. A bank statement or credit card showing access to around 500–1,000 SEK per day is usually enough to satisfy them.Recommended
Don't overstay the 90-day limit
Overstaying even by a single day can result in a fine, deportation, and a 1- to 5-year ban from Sweden and the entire Schengen area. Track your days carefully using the EU's Schengen calculator.
Schengen zone includes more than the EU
Sweden is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free allowance also covers Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and most other EU countries except Ireland and Cyprus. Always check the up-to-date list of Schengen members before traveling.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Swedish Border Control
After landing at Stockholm Arlanda or any other Swedish airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (non-EU/EEA queue). Hand over your passport. The officer will check its validity and may ask about the purpose and length of your stay, where you're staying, and your return plans. Answer simply and truthfully. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
2
Present Supporting Documents If Asked
While not routinely requested, be ready to show a hotel booking, travel insurance, proof of funds (bank statement or credit card), and your return or onward ticket. The officer can ask for any of these if they have doubts.
3
Passport Stamp and Enter
Once approved, the officer stamps your passport. You are then free to enter Sweden. Keep your passport safe – the exit stamp will be placed when you leave the Schengen area. Do not overstay the 90-day limit.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free allowance is 90 days within any 180-day period. Extensions are not granted for tourism. If you need to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must apply for the appropriate residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency before your visa-free period ends. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a re-entry ban.
No, visa-free travel does not permit any form of work, including remote work for a foreign employer. Officially, you are not allowed to do any productive activity in Sweden. Some digital nomads take the risk, but if discovered, you could be denied entry or deported. For remote work, check if you qualify for a specific 'digital nomad' permit – Sweden does not currently have one for Australians.
You can stay in Sweden and other Schengen countries for a maximum of 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. The calculation is backwards-looking: every time you enter, check how many days you were in Schengen during the previous 180 days. If you've already spent 90 days, you must wait until the older days drop out before you can re-enter. Use the EU's Schengen calculator app to track yours.
Yes, as long as you stay within the Schengen area and respect the overall 90-day limit. Sweden is part of Schengen, so you can cross borders to Denmark, Germany, France, etc., without additional checks. Note that some EU countries (like Ireland) and non-EU Schengen countries (like Norway, Switzerland) are also included. Always check the Schengen zone membership before crossing.
Immediately report the theft to the local police (Swedish Police Authority). Get a police report. Then contact the Australian Embassy in Stockholm (or nearest consulate) to apply for an emergency passport. You'll need the police report and two passport photos. Once you have the emergency passport, you can leave Sweden. Do not overstay – explain your situation to border control if needed.
No, travel insurance is not a legal requirement for visa-free entry. However, it is strongly recommended because medical costs in Sweden can be very high for uninsured non-EU visitors. Sweden offers some emergency healthcare but not free to tourists without insurance. Make sure your policy covers Sweden and at least €30,000 in medical expenses.
When traveling within the Schengen area (e.g., from Denmark or Germany by train), there are no systematic border checks. However, Sweden occasionally conducts random internal controls, especially at Malmö, Helsingborg, and Stockholm Central. You must still carry your passport and be prepared to prove your identity and legal status if stopped. The 90-day limit still applies.
