Required for all visa-exempt visitors
Apply for your NZeTA at least 72 hours before departure. The $17 NZD fee covers the NZeTA plus the $35 NZD International Visitor Levy — valid for 2 years. Most approvals come through within minutes, but don't risk it at the gate.Apply for NZeTARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid only for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. Airlines sometimes enforce 6 months validity — check with your carrier before check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa-free entry
Immigration officers at Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington will ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to have ready
While not always checked, having a hotel booking or a friend's address handy speeds up the queue. If you're staying with family, carry their contact details and address.Recommended

Immigration may ask how you'll fund your trip. Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least NZD 1,000 per month of stay. A quick screenshot from your banking app works.Recommended
No visa, no time limit

What happens at the border

1
Complete online declaration
Within 24 hours before departure, fill out the free New Zealand Traveller Declaration online. No visa or NZeTA is needed, but all arrivals (including Australians) must submit this digital form. You'll receive a QR code to show at passport control.
2
Arrive at the airport in New Zealand
At major airports like Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch, follow signs for passport control. Australians with an ePassport (age 12+) can use the eGates (SmartGate): scan your passport and look into the camera. No paper forms needed.
3
Present your passport
If you cannot use eGates or prefer a booth, join the queue for a border officer. Hand over your passport and your Traveller Declaration QR code. Officers do not routinely ask about funds or return tickets for Australians.
4
Collect your bags and exit
After passport control, collect your luggage and proceed to customs. You must declare any biosecurity items (food, wood, outdoor gear). There is no separate arrival card to fill.
